What the InScript layout does

InScript assigns a fixed Indian-script character to each physical key. It is positional rather than phonetic: pressing K produces क, while pressing D produces the halant ्. This predictability makes the layout suitable for touch typing once the positions are learned.

Hindi and Marathi both use Devanagari, so their main InScript positions are shared. Marathi practice additionally relies on characters such as ळ, available with Shift plus N.

Read the bilingual keyboard

Each TypeScore Lab key shows the Devanagari output prominently and the physical English label below it. A smaller upper legend shows the Shift output. When the next prompt character needs Shift, both the character key and Shift keys are highlighted.

The mapping follows the modern Devanagari InScript arrangement. The central letter keys contain common consonants, vowel signs sit mainly on the left side, and less frequent independent vowels appear on the Shift layer.

Understand Devanagari input order

Devanagari is stored as an ordered sequence of characters and rendered as readable clusters. Type a consonant before its dependent vowel sign. Type a halant between consonants to create a conjunct. The shape on screen may reorder or combine, but the underlying key sequence remains meaningful.

  • कि is entered with क followed by ि.
  • क्र is entered with क, ्, and र.
  • क्ष can be entered with क, ्, and ष.
  • Use Space only after the complete word.

Built-in versus system keyboard

Built-in InScript is useful when the device remains on an English layout. A native system InScript keyboard can also enter Devanagari directly. For phonetic input, disable the built-in conversion and let the operating system compose its suggestions.

Browser and operating-system input methods can behave differently during composition. If a system IME opens a candidate window, use System keyboard mode so that Enter, Space, and candidate selection remain under IME control.

Memorise keys through practice

Do not try to learn the entire chart at once. Start with home-row consonants, add vowel signs, and then include the upper and lower rows. Keep the visual keyboard open, but look at the highlighted key instead of searching your physical keyboard. Over time, reduce how often you refer to the chart.

Frequently asked questions

Is InScript the same as phonetic typing?

No. InScript uses fixed physical key positions. Phonetic input converts Roman spellings into suggested Devanagari words.

Do Hindi and Marathi use the same InScript keyboard?

They share the main Devanagari layout. Language-specific characters and vocabulary differ; Marathi commonly uses ळ, shown on Shift plus N in this implementation.
